The Coach D Anthony Story:
'The Best Corner Man In The Business'
By D Anthony, New Destiny Life Coaching, June 2011
Following 20+ highly successful years managing business-critical telecommunications projects and teams for three Fortune 500 companies, I realized I could no longer contently sacrifice the lion's share of my invaluable, ever waning, waking hours to purposes that ultimately lacked purpose. Oh sure, I had helped my fair share of co-workers over the years, offering up some much needed inspiration and perspective in corporate environments where such was typically in rare supply. And I'd managed to have had a highly-praised inspirational self-help book published - which, by all indications, continues to make a real 'rubber-meets-the-road' impact in readers' lives. Further, I was successfully managing, and producing uplifting content for, two inspirational websites - one of which has been providing insight, support and inspiration for well over a decade. However, that would no longer be enough.
So, on that one fine undeserving day, when I, Senior Technical Manager of a 35-member international team, responsible for the systems delivery and support producing millions of revenue generation for the company - was so unceremoniously handed my 'pink slip'… It probably should have been considered one of the worst days of my life. (After all, there was no justification for it. I had managed through and successfully delivered on every stressful project and crisis, effectively navigating my team through some pretty unreasonable situations along the way. I had fostered a great relationship within my team, was a recognized expert in my area of specialty and was poised for considerable advances in the coming year.) By all accounts, it should have been one of my worst days. However, it wasn't.
No, despite the fact that my manager had effectively squeezed as much out of me as possible before letting me in on the secret that I was being let go… Despite telling me it was a financial thing, although the company was posting as healthy profits as ever… Despite the real reason being that I happened to have a disingenuous, inexperienced manager who had the impression he could do things better without me... (Of course, merely four months later, and things had disintegrated to the extent that he was removed from his position. That Karma is a heck of a thing isn't it?)
It most certainly was not one of the worst days of my life. To the contrary, what I've come to realize is it was one of the greatest days of my life.
You see… I realized that this latest challenge was actually a good thing. It was life offering me a good swift quick along with a dosage of much needed perspective. Life's unmistakable message was that time (in my life) was passing and it was most assuredly time for a substantive life change. It was no time to simply ignore the opportunity and run back to a replacement well-paying corporate management position that nicely fit my comfort zone. No. It was time for my life to take a different path.
"A man is a success if he gets up in the morning and goes to bed at night and in between does what he wants to do." - Bob Dylan
What was clear was that I could no longer readily justify a continued investment of the lion's share of my waking hours to causes that had little to do with the difference I was making in the world and fostering better lives.
Soon after, I would get a formal introduction to the perfect new career path for me - life coaching. Here was a profession that was all about helping people live better lives and the effective implementation of many of the kind of life-enhancing, empowering principles and practices I often suggested to people… many of the same uplifting and inspiring perspectives featured in my writing for the book and for the websites.
Enthusiastically, I enrolled in one of the premier accredited Life Coach Certification Programs, successfully earning my certification as a Life Coach. Since that time, in addition to universally witnessing clients cast aside longstanding limiting thoughts and paradigms and successfully incorporate meaningful life-enhancing perspectives and behaviors - I've been fortunate enough to have clients share immensely gratifying gratitude for enduring improvements accomplished in numerous quality of life areas including self-confidence, self-worth, finding more passion, finding more happiness, effective communication with spouse and children, happiness within marriage/relationship, weight loss, longstanding effort to quit smoking, coping with the impacts of childhood abuse, coping with debilitating ailments and enhanced stress management on the job to name a few. It didn't take long for me to appreciate the potential and importance of the impact I was now making. I'd found my New Destiny - to help others discover theirs. And I've never been truly happier or more fulfilled.
I'm fortunate to be able say my days are no longer consumed with making machines and lines of code work better - so much as they are with helping people to live and be better. That we all might have more enjoyable and meaningful days and lives…
